Don’t Miss This… Your Past Is Not Your Future
John 8:3-5 3 - 3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst 4 they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. 5 Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?
POINT 1: YOUR PAST MAY DESCRIBE YOU, BUT IT DOESN’T DEFINE YOU
• Your past may describe you, but it does not define you.
POINT 2: JESUS CONFRONTS SIN, BUT DOESN’T CONDEMN
John 8:6–8 6 This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. 7 And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground.
• Jesus doesn’t rush to condemn… He moves with purpose.
POINT 3: YOU CAN’T MOVE FORWARD IF YOU’RE STILL HOLDING WHAT GOD RELEASED
John 8:10–11 10 Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.
Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
• You’re not managing your guilt, you’ve been released from it.
• You can’t walk into your future, while holding onto your past.
• God not only releases you, He recreates you.
POINT 4: GOD CALLS YOU FORWARD, NOT BACK
2 Corinthians 5:17 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.[a] The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
Isaiah 43:18, “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old.19 Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.
• You can’t step into the new, while living in the old.
• If God removed it, why are you still carrying it?
